SMARTCO work's with community crime prevention activities for at-risk youth such as
Alternatives for Youth. The Youth Service Corps, and
Big Brothers and Big Sisters enables their clients to become familiar with computer repair, software
applications/operation, and eventual PC assignment to homes.
In a recent expansion of our program, we are atttracting recent graduates of computer repair
courses. These individuals are offered hands-on experience under the watchful eye of our highly
skilled, volunteer technicians that will better prepare them for the world of work.
We have in excess of 250 volunteer technicians that donate time to the project. From 2001 to present,
these volunteers averaged 10,000 hours of service annually to the project. Our principle source
of supply of the ADP equipment is the U.S. Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland, which
donates its excess equipment under the provisions of the Technology Transfer Act. A Memorandum
of Agreement with the Navy has consummated the continuous availability of excess personal
computers and other ADP equipment to SMARTCO. Local businesses and private individuals also
donate their excess ADP equipment to the project. Since 1995 SMARTCO has refurbished and provided
over 10,000 personal computers and over 4,000 peripherals to the schools and non-profits mostly
in the southern Maryland region.
